Eine Barlow wird statt dem Okular in das Teleskop gesteckt, das Okular wiederum wird hinten in die Barlow gesteckt. Bei vielen Teleskopen ist in der Grundausstattung ein 25mm Okular enthalten, kombiniert mit dieser Barlow, erhält man eine Vergrößerung wie bei einem 5mm Okular, hat jedoch weiterhin den bequemen Einblick. Das Barlow-Element ist von seiner Hülse jedoch auch abschraubbar und lässt sich durch das M28,5x0,6 Filtergewinde auch direkt ins Okular reinschrauben. Der Verlängerungsfaktor reduziert sich dann auf ca. 3,5fach. Mit einem Okular und dieser Barlow kommt man somit auf drei verschiedene Vergrößerungen.

Diese Barlow ist sowohl visuell als auch fotografisch verwendbar und sehr universiell einsetzbar. Sie hat 31,7mm Steckhülse, das Barlow-Element selbst hat Standard M28,5x0,6 Filtergewinde, welches sich in vielen Kameras direkt einschrauben lässt. Wenn kein Filtergewinde vorhanden ist (z.B. DSLR Kamera), kann man sie auch mit dem okularseitigen T2-Gewinde an die Kamera befestigen.

Da eine Barlow den Fokuspunkt herauslegt, kann eine Verlängerungshülse notwendig sein, z.B. die preisgünstige 1z37.
